Reduce cholesterol with a jab of vaccine
Miracle vaccine helps to prevent/treat heart disease.
Cholesterol is an important factor in a person developing heart disease and other cardio- vascular diseases like strokes.
Risk factors for increased cholesterol levels in the blood are sedentary lifestyle, obesity, alcohol consumption and high fat diet-the bane of modern living.
The natural methods to reduce blood cholesterol include dietary discretion and regular physical exercise - a tall task for many people. If goals are not achieved by natural methods, doctors prescribe a group of drugs called statins.
In a novel strategy, scientist are trying to develop a vaccine to reduce total cholesterol and LDL Cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”)
A study was conducted in mice. Mice bred to develop heart and vascular disease, were given AT04A vaccine or a placebo vaccine (control). They were then fed a high-fat diet for 18 weeks.
The research found that, compared with the control, the vaccine reduced total and LDL cholesterol levels in the mice, and also reduced signs of fatty build-up in the arteries.
The vaccine has now moved on to the first stage of human trials to see if it's safe to use in humans.
It is possible that in the future, we may be able to protect ourselves from high cholesterol (and its harmful effects) with a vaccine jab!!
Indeed an interesting study and concept.
The candidate vaccine AT04A works by producing antibodies against an enzyme called proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9).
Normally, the enzyme prevents or stops the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the body. If the enzyme is blocked by antibodies, LDL cholesterol will be cleared faster from the body, resulting in lower levels.
Indeed very promising but still very far from actual use in humans.
Animal studies are useful for giving an indication of whether new treatments have potential for humans.
Phase1 human trials are now being conducted, which will only establish the safety of the candidate vaccine in humans.
Trials for effectiveness in humans will occur even later.
This will be a great breakthrough in helping to reduce cholestrol and prevent/ cure heart disease.
