You must start an exercise program ( if you don’t already have an exercise regimen ) to stay healthy and fight diabetes.
But that does not mean that you have to exercise for hours to achieve your goals. You can manage your diabetes by just being active, even if it means walking or cycling for a few minutes daily.
Exercise, along with a proper diet and proper medication will help you to
- Lower blood glucose level
- Control your weight
- Improve blood flow and overall health
Make an exercise plan
Consult your doctor before you start. Check what exercises are suitable for your current physical state and ailments. Talk to a physiotherapist to help you develop an exercise plan.
Be realistic with your goals and start slowly. You can increase the frequency and intensity later.
Level of Intensity for exercising
You should exercise at moderate intensity – your breathing will become heavy , yet you will be comfortable.
Thereafter you can increase the levels once you start to feel comfortable.
If you are just starting out, you can exercise by walking even for 10 mins a day and then increase the duration to 20 mins after a week.
You can add another 10 mins after a week so you do 30 mins a day.
Then increase the intensity every week
If you have trouble walking you can try
- aerobics in the water
- stretching ( for upper body only)
- weight training while seated
